Politics and Economy

Mauritania has been greatly affected by the repercussions of the health crisis associated with Covid-19, and the Ukraine war. The economic and social measures taken by the government have contributed to mitigating, to some extent, the effects of the shocks resulting from this crisis.

It is worth noting that, despite the difficulties experienced by the Mauritanian economy, public policies have been put in place that enable innovative and promising solutions to be found to achieve comprehensive economic growth. Indeed, several measures have been taken in recent years in the field of planning and accelerating the pace of reforms with the aim of improving the business climate and practice, developing private investments (national and foreign), improving economic governance, promoting small and medium enterprises, and reducing the negative effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Thus, Mauritania was able to consolidate its gains in the field of macroeconomic stability, which would enhance its economic ability to confront emergency conditions and accelerate the implementation of economic programs, through the “My Priorities” program with a financial envelope of approximately 24.2 billion new ouguiyas (approximately 652 million US dollars), and extends Over a period of 30 months (2020-2022).

This program is based on six axes: (1) developing infrastructure that supports growth, (2) improving social supply and supporting demand, (3) valuing the capabilities of productive sectors and accelerating the achievement of self-sufficiency in the field of food, (4) supporting the private sector (classified and unclassified), (5) afforestation and creating environmentally sustainable job opportunities, (6) governance and program implementation.
